Potterton Puma combi boiler repair in Dulwich,
South East London: a typical example of a combi
boiler that can always be repaired. The design is different which
can make them seem a bit more difficult to repair than "normal"
boilers.
I regularly do Potterton Puma combi boiler
repairs in Dulwich, Nunhead and that part of
South East London. For some reason there seems to be a
relatively high concentration of them around there. People call me
on a regular basis because they have been told by a central heating engineer that this boiler
can't be repaired, and need to fork out for a new one. So far, this
has been nonsense in 100% of the cases for Puma combis.
The
usual excuses are brought up e.g. parts not available any more, or
the boiler is dangerous.

What goes wrong with Potterton Puma boilers? In the majority of
cases, it is one of the following reasons that cause the problem.
The pcb is rather exposed in this boiler and has been known to fail.
Especially on the models with a permanent pilot light, the fan can
be worn/faulty.
Central heating systems that suffer from
corrosion and limescale, have an increased chance of problems with
the diverter and the pressure sensor. If the installation was not
quite done to spec, you may find a lot of corrosion.
Dulwich and/or Nunhead ( like most of south east
London area ) also suffer from hard water and often low mains
pressure which does not help. As a result, not only the boiler, but
the whole central heating system is full of rust, limescale and
magnetite.
This is a typical case where a new boiler will
NOT solve the problem, and a boiler repair is much better than a cheap replacement. Because the whole central heating
system is full of gunge, a new boiler will work for a while, but in
all likelihood, the problems will come back. The only way to get rid
of this kind of contamination, is by using acid. That means almost
automatically the need for a powerflush.
This is not cheap,
but it is important to realise that the cost for this treatment can
NOT be deducted from the cost of a new boiler when you weigh the
costs; it should be done in either case. The good news is, that once
the system is clean ( and is serviced when due ) THIS PROBLEM WILL
NOT COME BACK! That also means that when the day finally comes that
you do need to change the boiler, it will be less expensive because
no cleaning of the central heating system will be needed.
In
more than half of the Potterton Puma combi boiler repairs
that I have done in Dulwich and Nunhead,
corrosion/rust/limescale was either the cause of the problem, or a
major contributor. All and all, the Potterton Puma combi
boiler is not of a fantastic build quality, but it is not a
really bad boiler.
There are still many thousands of them
around. In general, people that own one and have it properly
serviced every year, should expect to get on average another 5 years
out of them.
How can I guarantee Potterton Puma
combi boilerrepairs, and keep them
working for years to come, when other central heating engineers in south east London have assured you that it is
beyond repair?
For one thing, I don't like
replacing/installing boilers and therefore I make much more of an
effort to repair the old boiler in stead of trying to install a new
one. Secondly: experience and knowledge. I know the boiler, I have
serviced and repaired countless numbers of them. I know the weak
points, and most importantly for you, I know how to solve the
problems they present. I have had them in bits, completely stripped.
I know where they leak and where they block.

Some faults appear on the models with the pilot, some on the ones with
electronic ignition, and other problems can happen on any model.
Although I can't support it with scientific evidence, from my experience as a central heating engineer in south east London where there are a lot of Potterton Puma combi boilers,I have the
impression that they are a bit more sensitive to lack of a "clean"
electrical supply than others. As with any boiler, they should
always be protected by a 3 Amp fuse, not 13 Amp.
