Boiler repair Bromley and south east London FAQs
Boiler repair FAQs, addressing customers' most common queries that I have come across most in my work as a
central heating engineer around
Bromley and
south east London.
Q: My boiler doesn't work, where do I find a good plumber?
A:Do some basic checks yourself first. Visit the
boiler breakdown
page for some simple tests to verify that it is indeed
you boiler, and not some other problem.
Q: My boiler is condemned, does that mean it can not be repaired?
A: Check the page:
Keep the condemned boiler you have!
for some real facts about condemned boilers, it is probably not as bad as it sounds. In itself, when a boiler gets condemned, it just means that it
is not safe to use. It may be completely dead, but on many occasions in
Bromley and
south east London was a
condemned boiler repaired.
Q: How often does my boiler need servicing?
A: Most manufacturers recommend a service once a year; in some cases that is more than ample, in other cases it is not enough. It
depends on your particular situation.
Q: The chap that camne around is Gas Safe Registered, does that mean he is a top
central heating engineer?
A. Being Gas Safe Registered is like having a driving license; it is a minimum requirement.
A chap who just came out of "plumber's school last week, is unlikely to be as good as someone with years experience.
Q: Does everybody who works on gas boilers have to be Gas Safe Registered?
A: Yes, everyone that works in the gas industry, has to be registered. Those that are not registered themselves, but
work for a company that holds the registration, can NOT legally boiler repairs after work or over the weekend.
Q: I thought you had to be Corgi registered to work on boilers?
A: That used to be the case. Corgi lost the contract, and have been replaced by Gas Safe Register. Corgi still try to use the name recognition
that they built up over the years with money payed up by the industry to insinuate they are play a key role in gas safety. It is not true. Corgi is now
just a commercial organisation, and have absolutely nothing to do with gas safety. You could ask yourself why somebody would want to use the Corgi brand,
years after they were replaced by Gas Safe Register.
Q: Are you really sure you can repair any boiler in
Bromley or
south east London?
A: Guaranteed.
If you have given me accurate information about which make and model boiler that needs repairing, assure required access and normal conditions, I will find the fault or you don't pay a penny.
By normal access and conditions I mean simple things like being able to get to the boiler, electricity working, and the pipes not frozen up. If the whole thing is frozen
solid, I can't work on it. If the power to the property is not there, I can't do the job either.
Q: The chap that came around was Corgi registered, he showed me his card; isn't that better than Gas Safe Register?
A: No. Corgi is of no importance any more in the gas safety world. Those that show you a Corgi card and nothing else, should be regarded with suspicion.
Q: I know this bloke who works for a plumbing company, and he can do it on a saturday morning for half price, is that ok?
A: No, that is not legal. If you work for a company under their registration, it is illegal to do installations or repairs in your spare time.
Q: I am a bit short of cash, is it really necessary to service my boiler?
A: In that respect boilers are like cars. The longer the maintenance is overdue, the more likely it is the boiler will become
unreliable or dangerous.
Q: I have had already had two
central heating engineers look at the boiler, and neither could find the problem.
Do you think you can figure out what it is?
A: Yes. Provided the boiler is installed in a more or less normal way, and it is a boiler that was actually intended for use in the UK on natural gas.
If it is some unknown foreign brand that the previous owner brought back in his boot from a fleamarket in France, I don't guarantee anything. I do remember a case
right in the middle of
south east London, Dulwich to be precise, where I was asked to come and repair a boiler because others had looked at it and just shook their heads and left.
When I got there, I found the kithchen cupboard screwed against the boiler. I shook my head and explained to the owner that I could not open the boiler unless the
cupboard was removed. I am a central heating engineer, not a scorcerer. The customer shook her head and explained she was a normal customer and not a mind reader.
The cupboard was removed, and the
boiler repaired.
