Boiler replacement or repairing in South
East London and South West London is a question many people struggle
with. Can the existing one be kept? If it can, is it worth the
money? Will I save a lot of money on my gas bill if I get a new
one? Is it true that they only last five years? If you

It is usually a matter of
needing a bit of luck when it comes to this subject. However, there
are quite a few things worth knowing that may make your
decision about central heating repairs and broken boilers a
whole lot easier. Despite what a lot of "central heating engineers" may tell
people, 99% of boiler faults can be repaired. If I had a pint for every time I found a boiler only needed a new pump
when the owner was told by the previous plumber that it was beyond repair, I would wake up with a very bad head ache.
You may wonder if it is worth spending
an X amount on a boiler that is getting on a bit or not. I can help
with giving you the relevant information about that but
it is your decision. It all depends on the make, the model, the
age, how well it was installed and if it was adequately maintained
and a number of other factors. In some cases, like problems
caused by sludge and corrosion, a central heating repair
that solves this problem will actually be much better.
There are some models, and I literally mean some, for which you
can hardly buy spares any more, and even a few for which nothing is
available. These are obviously very difficult cases to solve. It
might be something ver simple and very basic that is worn out, if I
can't get it, I can't replace it. Leaving out those, every other
defect can be repaired. This might cost more money than it is worth
in my personal opinion, but it is possible to do it if the client
chooses to do so.
The argument "You need a boiler
replacement, this one is not allowed any more", is more likely
than not an attempt to sell you something you don't need. Unless
something changed dramatically since my last course ( and I still go
to courses about new developments on a regular basis ), anything
that was ever legally installed, can stay where it is. This makes
the claim about not being allowed rather doubtful and definitely
calls for a second opinion. These so called "modern" boilers,
have been around for many years, just not used so much in this
country. They were built here as long as about 30 years ago by
a chap called Archie Kidd, and considerably longer on the other side
of the channel in countries like Germany and Holland.
Boiler
replacements are often made to look unavoidable, but usually that is simply not true. There have been a few complete lemons
with a very bad track record in terms of reliability. There is one
model, that is well known in the trade, and you can be almost sure
that it will need repairing most years. Add the fact that
the parts are not exactly cheap for this one, and you start to
wonder if you aren't throwing good money after bad. It has 2
different parts that are very problem prone; one of around 100
pounds, and the other one more than twice that. Then there is a
handful of smaller things that tend to wrong too oftten.
Add your labour costs to this and that boiler may cost you 1500
pounds in repairs before you give up.
Fortunately, this
is one of the rare exceptions where I would say it is time for a
boiler replacement at the first major repair after it's
fifth birthday.
It can be totally different though as most real central heating engineers could tell you. Provided you get a decent quality, and they are properly installed, they can
last many years. They certainly have a live expectancy that is much
longer than the 5 year limit some will want you to believe
they have.
One of my two favourite models has been virtually
the same for about 8 years. I started using them after the
manufacturer sorted the teething problems out, and as far as I know,
every single one I have installed is still working fine. Only one of
them broke down, but was working as new within 24 hours.
A boiler replacement may cost a few bob if you want quality materials
and the work done by the book. But if you choose the quality option,
you can have many years of problem free heating and hot water. In
fact, the most common reason for problems with replacement boilers,
is poor workmanship.
As every good plumber will tell you,
replacing boilers is just like replacing anything else. If
you get the cheapest of the cheap from a supplier with no
credentials, you can expect inferior quality.
