Broag Avanta Remeha repairs in southeast London is something a lot of heating engineers struggle with. As a result, a lot of home owners that have one of these have
problems finding a company that can service them properly or sort out faults. The consequence of this is often long delays with all the related inconveniences you
can think of, and unpleasantly high prices when the job is finally finished.
There is a variety of reasons why repairing Remeha Avanta boilers can be such a challenge, most of which you can find in more detail below. On this page, you will only find information that relates to this particular model. As most people that tried to find a plumber to sort out their central heating can tell you, it can be difficult enough to find a good boiler engineer to fix any brand in south east London. But not to worry, if you need somebody who can fix this one and doesn't try to flog you a new one, call........
There are 3 main reasons why Remeha boiler repairs are more complicated than most other makes.
The first one is a simple matter of confusion. Most people, and that includes those in the trade, don't know exactly where they come from, what the boiler is called
exactly, or the company name.
The name of the company that makes these, is Broag-Remeha and the popular boiler they sell in the UK is the Remeha Avanta. They are part of a huge international group called BDR Thermea. The shares are owned by the Remeha Group, located in Holland. BDR Thermea as such came into existence as the result of a merger between De Dietrich Remeha Group and......... Baxi. The latter being the same group as Potterton, Main, Heatrae Sadia and Megaflo, to name but a few. Especially the domestic side is fairly small in this country, and not a whole lot is done by the manufacturer to pro-actively promote and support this section. You can get all the parts, and all the documentation.
For registered gas installers that have to deal with a machine they are not familiar with, there is even an option of getting specific technical information from people especially employed by the manufacturer for this purpose. It's all there, it's just that it can be a bit of an enterprise to get there. The last bit of the name confusion, is the fact that they are all called Avanta Plus, but there are three different types, and each type has different sizes with different details. The V-range, which is a direct replacement for traditional open vent boilers. They don't need a certain pressure to work with and come in 12, 15, 18, 24, and 30 kilo Watt maximum output.
The S-series, is the pressurised non-combi version. They are designed to work under pressure, and have the necessary safety devices built in to do so safely. There are only 3 sizes to choose from here: 18, 24 and 30 kilo Watt.
The C-model comes in 24, 28, 35 and 35 kilo Watt as a combination boiler.
Repairing Remeha Avanta combi boilers takes a bit of getting used to for a number of reasons. One reason is that these boilers can have several types of external controls
being the timer or clock and the room thermostat. It can be what is known as Open Therm, or universal. The Open Therm system was originally meant to be a controlling
method that would make the boiler more efficient, and a standard that could be used for any make that signed up to it. In reality, the savings are extremely modest, and
as a rule you can use the timer from one brand on the boiler of another. It is also much more complicated than universal controls, which means there is much more room to
do it wrong and create problems.
On top of all that, an Remeha boiler repair is complicated by the wide variety of parameters that can be set and displayed. In itself that can be a great asset, but the problem with these is that it is all done via a 2 digit display and 4 push buttons. First you use the complicated display menu and buttons to read a value, and then use the same to alter it and store it. You may have spotted that this means you have absolutely no idea about what happens to A, B and C, when you are in the process of changing D.
Let me give you an example. In order to get the boiler to work exactly as it is designed to do, you need to set the minimum and maximum output. To assure this is happening, you need to set it up so that the correct amount of gas is mixed with the correct amount of air, resulting in just the right amount of CO2 coming out the flue. This is easier said then done. When you alter the high value on the gas valve, you influence the low, and vice versa. When the fan speed changes, not only does the amount of air blown through the boiler change, the amount of gas released changes too. That makes it a combination of using different adjuster on the valve, the display to see what the boiler is doing, and a flue gas analyser to check what comes out of it. To add to the fun, you can only do this properly when the boiler at the normal working temperature. If it's too cold, the readings are wrong, and when it gets too hot, it turns itself off. In other words: you must have a means of getting rid of the heat produced whilst you are going through the process. I've heard people say it is like pushing a wheel barrow full of frogs; you can see them jump out, but to catch them you have to stop.
And so far we are only talking about when it is already working, so you can imagine what happens with an Remeha Avanta repair. In south east London, lots of plumbers call it despair, and don't even feel like trying. Granted, it is often not the easiest job compared to other makes, but that doesn't mean it can't be done. It is a matter of ticking all the boxes before you start. Get the complete manual with all the setting values and display guidance. Your normal toolbox with contents, and the combustion analyser at the ready.

The only thing left before you start the actual boiler repair, is making sure that all the radiators are open, and an ample flow of hot water is possible for test purposes. Now you go step by step through the verification process. Electricity correct? Enough gas available? Does the burner light, does it go high enough, do the radiators get warm and so on. In theory, it is simple; go through it step by step. Measure everything you do, and somewhere along the line you will find the culprit. Correct what is broken, and you end up with a repaired Broag Remeha Avanta that runs like a dream. If you are in southeast London, feel free to call the one of the numbers or send an email to see if I can help you too.
