Ideal Icos repairs in Bromley

Ideal Icos repairs in Bromley are more common than in south London but you find them just about anywhere. Although they come in a number of sizes starting at 12 kilo Watt right up to 36 kW, for some reason the models of about 20 kW are the most common. There were 5 different series and all of them apart from the M3080 have a number that relates to the amount of heat they can produce.
The Ideal Icos can be used as an open vent boiler as well as on a sealed aka pressurised system. They were first made in the year 2000, kept in production until 2010 and probably sold from stock until 2011 or maybe even 2012. They were superseded by the Evo, which looks very similar on the outside, but is a different boiler. Unlike the successor that has a combi version, none of the Ideal Icos boilers produce direct domestic hot water. That means you will always have a hot water cylinder if you have one of these models.
One of the great sales point of these boilers, was their compact size. That is nice for the users who often like to box them in or hide them in a kitchen unit. It is not so great for the heating engineer who has to service or fix them when they go wrong. This is no doubt one of the reasons why they are not very popular with plumbers. But despite what you may have been told, YOUR BOILER CAN BE REPAIRED,
provided it is not burned out, rotted away or fallen off the garage wall when you bumped into it with your 3 tonne four by four.

Ideal Icos system boiler repairs

repaired Ideal Icos Part of the challenge with It, as with any system or heat only boiler , is that the fault is not necessarily inside the white box on the wall. It can be the timer or programmer, the pump, the diverter-valve or zone-valve, extra safety devices like the pipe-stat or frost-stat, or the wiring to any of these components. As always, unless you don't mind paying a heating engineer for convenience, it is a good idea to first verify the basics yourself. if you need any guidance or advice on how to make sure that it is not something simple and considered a normal user operation like topping up the pressure.

How to check if your boiler is really broken
When you have done these checks, and you are pretty sure you need a heating engineer, you can speed things up by finding out exactly which model from which series you have. The best way to do this, is to find the Gas Council, or G.C. Number. It has a total of 7 digits in the form of; xx-yyy-zz. This will identify the exact unit, which will help to determine exactly what values should be measured and what order codes any parts that may need to be ordered have.
The 12 kw version is g.c. 41-397-95, 15 kw is 41-397-83, 18 kw is 41-397-84 and 24 kw is 41-397-85, 30 kw is 41-399-10 and 33 kw is 41-399-16.
There are two other versions with gc numbers 41-421-99 and 41-397-82, 15 adn 24 kw respectively.
The Ideal Icos m3080 has gc number 41-391-49 or 41-391-52; both are 24 kw.

Most common Ideal Icos repairs in Bromley

The most common Ideal Icos repairs in Bromley that I have had are probably those to do with the boiler having problems starting up. This can be caused by a number of different faults. Some of those are lack of proper maintenance, some are due to the design that made it possible to stick a lot of power and high efficiency in a small box. A combination of sensors, control board, and a variable fan, allow the boiler to produce a mixture of gas and air that should be exactly right. If any of those is not quite right, the mixture will be out. When that happens, the boiler starts to make funny noises when it tries to light, or it will fail completely.

Why Ideal Icos repairs can end up more expensive than necessary

Ideal Icos repairs can be more expensive than average for various reasons; some are unavoidable, some can be prevented. One of the most expensive variations that I have seen a number of times, could often have been avoided. The way this model gets high efficiency/high power a small size, is to use a variable speed fan that is fed directly from the board. When the type of motor used for this kind of fan has increased rotation resistance, it will draw more current to keep spinning. The fan can have increased rotation resistance for a number of reasons, amongst which: dirt, mechanical damage, the impeller scraping against the housing. When the the friction becomes greater than the power of the motor, the fan can stop spinning completely. At that point, the current increase can become so great the board is damaged. Sometimes that means the fan AND the board need replacing to get the boiler going again. Other times replacing the fan will do the trick initially, but the board dies not too long after.

In a lot of cases, a thorough annual service would have shown the danger signs with the use of a flue gas analyser. A competent and experienced heating engineer would check the proper working of the fan when the readings show that there is something wrong. Another reason is incorrect diagnosis. I have come across a number of these where the inner flue seal was incorrectly positioned and/or damaged. This can result in the same effects as a dodgy fan, a faulty board, failing sensors or various other reasons. If you know what you are doing, and know what to look for with these symptoms, you check this first. Those that are not very good at repairs, often start with changing the board followed by the fan and/or the probes. When that still doesn't make the boiler work properly, you are told that you need a new boiler.
Don't fall for it. Whenever you are told the boiler has had it, get a second opinion.

The Ideal Icos is typically one of those boilers that benefits more than average from a complete annual strip down service for a number of reasons. Some of those are due to the kind of system this boiler works on, and others are due to the design of the machine itself. The type of heat exchanger used, is prone to a build up of dirt. Failure to clean that dirt, will sooner or later result in your Ideal Icos needing repairs. Boilers in Bromley break down more between Friday and Sunday, than between Tuesday and Thursday.
But that is not all. You can easily spend some time researching for a local heating engineer who does good servicing. When you have an angry spouse and screaming children on your back, you are under a lot of pressure to call the first rather than the best. Another good reason to reduce the chances of needing unnecessary Ideal Icos repairs.
