Potterton Performa repairs in southeast London can almost always be finished the same day, thanks to the ample availability of spare parts for both
the pre 2005 standard efficiency models and the condensers that came after that. Between the two main series, this work horse has been on the UK market for
the best part of two decades. As one of the most recognised brand names, it is not surprising that the Potterton Performa can be found by the thousands in
southeast London alone.
Whereas the first series were only available as a combi, the high efficiency that superseded the old one is available as a system boiler as well. The HE series in essence a modification of the original model, with a secondary heat exchanger plus the required additional technology added to make it all work properly. As always, there are pro's and con's to this approach, and experts have held many long discussions without coming to a clear answer. One thing can hardly be denied though. By keeping the basis and adding only what is necessary to achieve the desired result, you also keep the collective knowledge gained from the experience of engineers that installed hundreds of thousands of standard efficiency Potterton Performas.
If you need somebody who knows these boiler and guarantees to be able to repair them, call:
The original combi came in 3 variations, the 24, 28 and 28i. The 24 has a predictable capacity of 24 kilo Watt, where the 28 and 28i weigh in at 29. In case you
are wondering, it is not a typo, and I don't know either why it is called a 28. In fact, it is probably fair to say nobody really knows any more.
The difference between the 28 and the 28i, is that the "i" version has a built in "mini hot water storage tank". This feature allows for a faster response when
a hot water tap is opened, but costs a little bit more per year to keep the water in this vessel at the required temperature. In terms of performance, all three
should be more than enough to supply comfortable central heating for anything up to about 4 bedrooms. As for domestic hot water production, it is a little bit less
impressive. The 24 gives ten litres per minute at a standard rise of 35 degrees Celsius, and the 28 models both give 12 litres per minute at the same rise.
They will run one bath or give one decent shower, but especially in winter, that is about the limit. This was quite all right in the eighties and nineties, when most people
only had one bathroom. It is probably only after the year 2000 that a second bathroom, shower or en-suite started to become more popular. This required a more
powerful hot water production and created the market for 30-40 kilo Watt combis.
All three variations have an independent control for the heating temperature and hot water temperature. This feature gives the user the comfort of getting both just right for their requirements, and it helps me when I repair boilers to speed up the diagnostic of the fault.
The Potterton Performa HE boilers come in both "heat only" or "system boiler", as well as in combi form.
The system boilers come in: 12 HE GCN 4159124, 18 HE GCN 4159125, 24 HE GCN 4159126, 28 HE GCN 4159127, where the number indicates the boiler size in kilo Watts.
The combination versions are very similar to the standard efficiency models in terms of output capacity. The difference is in the reduced amount of gas needed to achieve this. The addition of the secondary heat exchanger has lowered the gas use for the same performance by about 10%. In other words: the new version of the Potterton Performa combination boiler is suitable for the same use as the old version, it just costs less to run it.
If you are the proud owner of one of these, I'd say it is a fair statement to call yourself at least reasonably lucky.
In my professional, though personal, opinion, this is a pretty good value for money machine. It may be a little bit less than sophisticated top end models, but if you pay three times more than average, you can expect better than average. As far as I am aware, there are no major issues here in general. Every boiler can, and will go wrong at some point, but these are fairly reliable. If and when parts are needed, not only can you get them easily, they are also averagely priced. No doubt the worst enemies are poor quality install and lack of proper maintenance. Although that is generally a major reason for all central heating problems, you could argue it is even more true if there are no specific problems in general. A very simple install fault can cause major costs that could have easily be prevented by spending five more minutes on the initial job. One of the best examples is positioning the flue at the wrong angle. A standard efficiency boiler should have the flue two degrees downward. A sloppy installer that fixes the flue pointing 2 or 3 degrees up, will cause water to get into the boiler. This can damage the burner, the fan, or even rot a hole in the casing. To prevent this would have taken five minutes. By the time the fault causes the boiler to fail, you are talking of a minimum of a two hours labour and 200 pounds parts. A service or inspection by an experienced, conscientious heating engineer, would have exposed this failure and drastically reduced the cost to you. As always, you can save time and money by first checking that there really is a problem with the boiler, and that it is not something else. As it has several advantages, it is always a good idea to have the correct Service and Installation Manual for your specific Potterton Performa
at hand when it nees repairing
If and when the boiler needs repairing, it has a list of part numbers that help to ensure that the bits ordered are for your model, and not for the bigger or
smaller version for instance. It also helps the engineer working on it, to be more accurate and faster because it will specify the variables like pressure and
size for your particular boiler.
If you don't have the complete manual, feel free to email me, and I will return it with your your specific Potterton Performa service and repair manual in pdf from.
