A Powerflush for central heating is much more like a boiler repair than a matter of maintenance.
During the years I have been working as a central heating engineer in south east London, I have found ample proof that powerflushing only needs to be done once, and is certainly not needed every so many years.
If you have been told you need your system needs to be powerflushed, and you need someone to do it completely as it should be done, or you simply want a second opinion,

If you're suspicious of what you've already been told about a powerflush or your central heating by a central heating engineer, you may want to check if you are possibly in danger of being ripped off.
Unscrupulous and/or incompetent plumbers often use two cop outs to pad the bill or hide the fact they don't have a clue what the real problem is. "You need a new boiler" and "you need a powerflush" are rarely true.
Powerflushing of central heating systems in south east London
In many parts of the country we have limescale in the water, and this is especially true around south east London, Bromley and Croydon.
If you want to know what the inside of your central heating system looks like after a number of years, look at the
inside of your kettle. Now multiply that by the amount of hours you
use hot water or central heating compared to how many minutes the kettle is
actually on. I'm sure you get the picture.
Limescale on its own is bad enough, but there is more.
The inside or your radiators virtually always
untreated steel. Together with water and heat, you get rust
formation. This rust plus the limescale forms particles. These
particles can vary in size from tiny dust-specks, to quite sizeable
chunks, sometimes up to the size of raisins. These bits move through your system, and tend to end up at
two places. The bottom of your pipes and radiators, and anywhere
else where there is a narrow passage. That includes any type of
valve, sharp bends in pipes, and of course the place where you want
them the least: in your boiler.
In almost every case, using chemicals to clean the
system will do something. They both have their advantages and their
downsides.
Provided the system is suitable, a powerflush can be
do it in one day for most houses of the type and size that you find most in south east London. A chemical flush is quiet, a good heating engineer can
almost never be done in one day. It can even require 4 or 5 visits.
If you happen to work quite a way from home, that would mean taking
5 days of; effectively costing you a week's holiday. A powerflush would be much more attractive in this case.
There are also situations where chemicals alone
simply won't do the job, and you need pressure. Sometimes a system
simply does not lend itself to power flushing, and chemicals are the
way to go. Depending on the time of year, and where the main
concentration of the debris is, this can take a month.
Whether treated with a powerflush or an alternative way of dealing with the problem, it is very
rarely a matter of simply sticking the machine on or adding the
chemicals, and that is it. Apart from the fact that it usually takes quite a bit
more than that to actually clean the system properly, you also need
to get rid of the dirt. That is a job in itself.
More than once have I come across people that assured me the problem could not be down to sludge or corrosion. Invariably, they would tell me they were sure because the system had already been
treated either by the owner or they had paid a heating engineer to do it for them. The problem is that if you just manage to loosen up the debris but don't remove it adequately, it simply shifts to a different place.
Without fail, although it seemed that the problem was solved, it would always come back.
