Let me tell you a bit about myself and how I came to
be a qualified South London heating engineer.

Ever since I was a kid I have enjoyed repairing things. My earliest memories include meccano kits and Lego
blocks. A bit later on, still under the age of 10, I learned how to
repair my bicycle, from tightening the chain to aligning the wheels.
Around the same time, my interest was drawn to
toying with electrical things, initially battery powered. My parents
decided this was more than an impulse, so invested in a safe
transformer, rather than buy endless supplies of
batteries.
Quite naturally, this evolved into a fascination
with radios, televisions and transmitters. It was somewhere in my
teens, that I qualified in the design, building and maintenance of
wireless communication equipment.
As there was not a whole lot of demand for these
skills in those days, we are going back a fair few years, I decided
it was best to move a bit sideways. I became a toolmaker and worked
in the cad-cam industry.
Why I became a South London boiler engineer
Although it was very interesting, (there are probably still people walking around
with hip-implants that I made, airplanes with parts that I tooled,
and even some Ariane rockets went into space with a small
contribution from me) it had one big disadvantage: you always work
in the same workshop with the same people. I wanted more variety. A
change of direction was needed, and there was a vast shortage of heating engineers.
How is this relevant to a South London boiler
engineer or South London heating engineer? I came to the
conclusion my work was not going to keep me happy until I retired. I
was young enough to have a career change, but realised that it
should be the last one if I wanted to reach a high level of
expertise.
So I looked around, talked to people, and found one
profession more in demand than any other. An unbelievable amount of
people told me that they could not find a plumber for love or money,
and the business I should get into was without a doubt central
heating.
Skilled at fault finding
The knowledge and experience gained in telecommunications, give me an enormous
advantage in finding faults in the electrical and electronic
side of boilers and controls.
It has also proven very useful in the installation
and repair of wireless controls that are becoming ever more popular.
Where others pull their hair out in frustration, I am one of the
South London boiler engineers who can sometimes just look
around and find the problem without opening my toolbox, where others have given up.
It can't be a coincidence that I was one of the heating engineers out of many thousands, who was asked for feedback on the
prototype of the latest generation of digital wireless controls from
one of the leading brands.
On the mechanical side of things, if you have done
welding and brazing on all sorts of metals including high grade
stainless steel, stellite and silver, the bit of copper pipe soldering that heating engineers do,
is child's play.
And it is quite fun if you are able to actually make
a part that is obsolete out of a few metal bits in order to avoid
having to replace an otherwise perfectly fine boiler.

That is why I can say from experience: 99% of broken
boilers can be repaired. It also explains why I can repair 9 out of
10 boilers that have been condemned and the owner told it needed
replacing.
That is the difference between a South London gas
plumber, and a South London boiler engineer; I really am an
engineer.

You have peace of mind knowing that the bloke
working on your boiler actually prefers repairing it, and will only
advise replacement if it is really not worth repairing it.
